Which pruning and training techniques have scientific evidence in cannabis?
The techniques with the strongest research backing are topping (apical pruning) and lollipopping. Crispim Massuela (2022) and Folina (2020) documented a 13–19% increase in dry flower weight with apical pruning. Danziger & Bernstein (2021) found that double pruning was the highest-yielding treatment across all conditions tested. FIM, by contrast, has zero papers in cannabis or any other plant species.
How does topping work, and what does the science say about bud site position?
Topping breaks apical dominance and forces the development of multiple lateral meristems. Crispim Massuela (2022) measured differences in cannabinoid concentration by bud position: highest at the top, intermediate in the middle, lowest at the bottom. This matters when deciding which branches to keep after training.
When should you lollipop?
Danziger (2022) evaluated timing and found the most effective protocol was lollipopping roughly 7 days before the flip to 12/12, then repeating around day 21 of flower. No data supports doing it at a different time with equivalent results.
Does defoliation alone improve yield?
No. Danziger & Bernstein (2021) found that defoliation by itself produced yields equivalent to the untouched control group. However, when combined with bottom-bar lighting (BBLR), it improved bud uniformity. Defoliation is not a yield technique on its own — its effect depends entirely on context and light management.
What is the difference between LST and topping?
Low Stress Training (LST) works through a completely different mechanism: there is no cut or wound. The physical bending triggers a gravitropism response. Kitazawa (2008), studying Ipomoea nil, documented this mechanism. In cannabis, jasmonic acid — associated with repeated bending — rises above baseline after several days of application (Alter et al., 2024, Volcani Center). In autoflowering strains, LST is the only technique considered safe because it creates no wound and requires no recovery time.
What about super cropping, FIM, and ScrOG?
Super cropping: Park (2022) and Toth (2021) published two independent studies that found no effect on cannabinoid concentrations. It works as a canopy management technique, but there is no evidence it improves yield.
- FIM: 0 papers in cannabis or any other plant species. No data for or against it — it simply has not been studied.
- ScrOG: a single study with no control group. Not enough to make any claim about yield.
- Super cropping: 2 studies with no effect on cannabinoids. That is not the same as 'no data' — there is evidence, it just showed no improvement.
What is the safe pruning protocol?
The conservative protocol supported by available studies: never remove more than 20–25% of foliar biomass per session, allow 3 to 7 days of recovery between sessions, and dial light intensity down roughly 10% during the first 24 to 36 hours after pruning. For autoflowering plants, LST only — the veg window is too short to absorb the stress of a wound before flower sets in.
