Why do the first 14 days define the entire cycle?
Most of the problems that surface at flower actually started in the first two weeks. The seedling looks fine on the surface, but germination conditions and those early days of root development determine the root architecture that will support the entire plant. A temperature mistake during germination, overwatering between days 4–7, or insufficient light in week one create problems that are very hard to correct downstream.
What is the optimal germination temperature?
Temperature is the single most important variable in germination — more so than substrate or light. According to Geneve et al. 2022 (University of Kentucky), at 25 °C germination happens in 24–72 hours. At 18 °C it can take 7 days or more, and at 15 °C the seed may not germinate at all. Keep the environment warm and dark throughout the paper-towel pre-germination process.
- 25 °C → taproot in 24–72 hours (optimal range)

How do you transfer the seed to the substrate, and how deep?
Once the taproot is 0.5–1 cm long, use tweezers to place the seed in the substrate taproot-down at 5–10 mm depth. Go deeper and the seedling may not emerge. Each substrate has different parameters from day one.
- Soil: plain water only, pH 6.0–6.2 (NC State, Volcani Center, Truog chart)
- Coco: EC 0.4 (~200 PPM) + cal-mag, pH 6.0–6.3
- Hydro: EC 0.5 (~250 PPM), pH 5.8–6.0
- Planting depth: 5–10 mm in all three substrates
How much light does a seedling need in days 0–14?
Seedlings can't handle high light intensity. The sweet spot is 100–200 PPFD with your LED at 25–40% power, 18/6 photoperiod. Too little light causes stretch: the stem grows tall and weak reaching for the source. If you see a long, thin stem, drop the LED 10 cm closer. Recommended VPD is 0.4–0.8 kPa for days 0–7 and 0.6–1.0 kPa for days 7–14 (Jin et al. 2019).
When do you start feeding, depending on substrate?
There is no universal rule. What works in soil can be lethal in coco or hydro.
- Soil: light feeding from day 10–12 if the medium is light/unamended; 150–250 PPM, pH 6.0–6.2, water every 2–3 days when the pot feels light
- Coco: feed from transplant day; EC 0.6–0.8 (300–400 PPM), pH 6.0–6.3, fertigate 1–2 times daily, never let it dry out
- Hydro: EC 0.8–1.0 (400–500 PPM), pH 5.8–6.0, constant recirculation, reservoir at 18–22 °C
What are the three killers that take down seedlings before you notice?
According to Punja et al. 2019 (peer-reviewed), damping off carries extremely high mortality once it appears. The three most common problems between days 7–14 are:
- Damping off: the stem thins and pinches at the soil line, caused by Pythium, Fusarium, or Rhizoctonia. Prevention: avoid overwatering, ensure good airflow, use sterile medium
- Nutrient burn: yellowing tips; EC above 1.2 causes damage in seedlings
- Stretch: long, weak stem from insufficient light; fix by moving the LED closer and checking your PPFD
